As mentioned in the section About Me, I work with adults in individual counseling. I do not do marital counseling or work with children. However, in the office suite I am in, my colleagues do marital counseling, family counseling, and work with children. In addition, the mental health community in Alaska has an excellent list-serve for connecting with other professionals who work with specific populations.
I have contracted with a number of Employee Assistance Programs (EAP), which is an excellent resource for employees. I am also a preferred provider for Blue Cross/Blue Shield, and also work with Tricare.
I have worked with substance use disorders since 1988. It was my work with clients who had substance use disorders that I became motivated to continue my schooling. I saw the big stumbling blocks many of them were struggling with, and wanted to learn how to help them. There were a lot of people struggling with grief, and with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and they would numb their feelings by using alcohol or some other drug. Too many times, their relapse with substances was treated as a legal problem instead of as a problem with managing emotional pain.
